The Magic of Frankincense

December 2, 2019 By Nancy Alder

Frankincense is one of the most prized and precious essential oils due to its extensive health benefits.* A PubMed search shows the many peer-reviewed scientific publications and studies on the use of this powerful essential oil.

It was used anciently in everything from perfumes, to wellness support, to lotions for the skin.It is often considered to be the “king of oils” because of its many uses. Frankincense comes from the Boswellia species of tree and is native to Ethiopia, Somalia, India, and the Arabic Peninsula. It has been used for many years in a variety of traditional medicine practices.

The Frankincense essential oil industry is often not one to be celebrated. Frankincense has been over harvested by many essential oil companies and their brokers. These brokers not only do not have sustainability in mind, but often are violent to the farmers, harvesters, distillers who live in the Frankincense areas. So it’s extremely important to use only Frankincense oil that is sustainably produced and that supports the local community. dōTERRA, through our Co-Impact Sourcing model, works directly with the growers, harvesters and distillers of oils to support them and the environment. Frankincense is one of the oils I use daily. I take two drops every morning under my tongue for cellular support.* Sublingual, or under the tongue, use of oils is a way to get the essential oil fastest systemically into the body. I also use Frankincense for calming and anxiousness support. One of my favorite ways to use Frankincense is on my third eye, or on the crown of my head. I apply the oil and take deep breaths. It is also an oil I recommend for yoga and meditation. One of the other aspects I love about Frankincense is that I find it enhances every diffuser blend and magnifies the other essential oils in that blend. You cannot go wrong with adding it to your daily wellness practices or diffuser blends.

Here are some more uses for Frankincense:

  • Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of gardening for a warming and soothing effect.
  • Apply topically to help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.
  • Massage on the bottoms of feet for a relaxing, balancing experience.
  • Take one to two drops in a veggie capsule to support healthy cellular function.*
