#365Newbie: Day??? Pumped Up Kicks, A Giveaway

October 16, 2012 By Nancy Alder

Muladhara Chakra

Hey lovely readers, I hope this first post in October finds you enjoying all things fall if you are in the Northern hemisphere and spring in the Southern hemisphere.  The change in seasons can be so welcome:  new colors, new smells, new temperatures, and a new approach to our practice.  But let’s face it, we are all creatures of habit and some times the newness of the season causes us to slip and fall and stumble.  We cannot find our footing.

Enter the Muladhara Chakra, that downward connecting, Earthy chakra which keeps us stable and rooted.  Utilizing a practice that connects us with our feet, close to the ground can be such a great way to ride the waves of seasonal change.  Check out my most recent MindBodyGreen post about grounding during Vata season (fall) for more tips on tapping into that Earthiness.

With all the slipperiness and unsteadiness that comes with seasonal change and the need for some sure footing in mind, I was thrilled when the crew at NamaSTAY towels asked if I wanted to do a giveaway for my awesome readers.  These really cool mat towels have an ingenious flap that folds over (and stays!!) the top and bottom of your mat so they do not slide off during even a very sweaty practice.  Add to the fact they are great colors and ridiculously soft and grippy and I was sold! I even used mine during my eldest elf’s baseball game the morning after a crazy and rainy night.  That towel kept my Utkasana rooted and dry despite the soaking wet ground. They are the pumped up kicks for mats of the barefoot yogis!

The NamaSTAY folks have given me a towel to offer to one lucky US reader and a 20% discount to any readers of this blog for future purchases (use the unique FLYINGYOGINI code on checkout).

Here’s the skinny on the giveaway:

What:  One NamaSTAY towel of the winner’s color and size choice.

How: Like NamaSTAY on Facebook and like this blog on Facebook.   Also, leave a comment on how you stay grounded during the changes in the season.

When: The contest is limited to US residents only and runs from 10-15-2012 through 10-25-2012 6:00 a.m. EST.  The winner will be notified in the comments, on the Flying Yogini Facebook Page and on Twitter.

I stay grounded during the changes of seasons by focusing on the things about the upcoming season that I love.

I try to stay grounded during each season by keeping up with my regular practice. No matter what the weather is outside, I can still get to class!

I stay grounded by eating more earthy foods such as root vegetables, soups, grains, try to go to bed earlier, practice a consistent sequence instead of a dynamic creative yoga practice as I find this constant helps me stay grounded in an ever changing world.

I do longer meditations in fall and winter to let my roots grow deep and strong.

I stay grounded by waking up each day and thinking of all that I have to be grateful for; before I even give myself the opportunity to be upset I think of my blessings, & my mantra for the day. A favorite: “I am me, and I will be better than the me I was yesterday”

I stay grounded by taking time for myself, go for a walk in nature whatever the weather is with good clothes and thank the earth for all the beauty it gives to my eyes and my soul.

I’m reminded to ground myself in the present moment every time my dogs come by for a pet. They snap me right out of whatever mental dizziness I’m in and back to the here and now. Nothing like puppy love to ground you back into your heart. 🙂
