Today is the Vernal Equinox.  Dear readers of the Northern Hemisphere it is officially the first day of spring!  The darkness of winter will slowly fade and the bright sunshine and flowers will begin to show their faces.  Despite being a cold and snow fanatic, I too embrace these seasonal changes with aplomb. I love being able to go barefoot.  I love seeing the green and the leaves return to the trees.  I love having baby deer in our yard and Luna moths returning at night.

It is hard not to embrace the teeming of life that comes with spring.

My practice changes along with the weather. I crave more heart openers, more heat and lots and lots of twisting.  I want my body to move and groove. I want to take my yoga outside and I want to feel the sun inside and out of my body.

I dream of Surya Namaskars on the lawn.

    I received wheel this week in class twice, where you can be grounded and open all at once, and push yourself higher and opening up more – growing.

    In addition, I think it’s good to remember that the southern hemisphere now is in autumn…change abounds for all.

    Spring time, for me, brings upon bodily cravings to express Utthita Trikonasana, aka Triangle Pose. As the days grow longer and brighter and the weather warms up, my body opens up in this pose like a plant growing out of the soil. As seedlings sprout a shout of vibrant green in the Earth, I (without fail) get a deep pop of the greater trochanter as I bend my torso over to one side. I then bend and re-straighten my front knee until I find just that right sigh in my hamstrings, the way that leaves unfold and sometimes tuck back in at night. In the fullness of the expression, like the face of a flower at noon, my arm extends long and high with my hand reaching up to the sun.
